#21: Podcast
Well, managed to get into these sites at home. Podcasts are an interesting concept and located one which was quite interesting :http://www.deliberatenoise.com/rss/bookfeed.xml. I have added this to my bloglines account. It is a small site at present, and should be interesting to see how it develops. perhaps I will be able to access it via bloglines at work and it won't be blocked. With dialup connection it does take a long time to actually be able to listen to anything in entirety
Catchup - social networking
The articles on these networks were most interesting, especially who uses what sites and why. I belong to Old Friends site but have had no need or wish to belong to Beebo, or Facebook at present. I expect if I was overseas or my family was, then i would probably use Facebook.

Week 9: # 22
Project Gutenburg - ebooks. Not sure what I expected but I found this site to be very "worthy". maybe I just read the wrong types of books which are not published as ebooks. Anyway, I had difficulty finding any of my favourite authors. The ability to have the books published in different languages is quite extensive. For the dedicated reader after classics this would be great. Then different ways of downloading were quite interesting, butyou wouldn't want to be downloading with a dialup connection! Don't think I would visit this site again.
Week 9 ; #21
Haaving a bit of difficulty with this exercise through blocked sites so will come back to it.

Week 9 : # 20
At home dialup is very slow but I managed to view Youtube. Having seen the original "Conan the Barbarian" several times years ago, I thought "Conan the Librarian" sounded interesting. Very funny! (macbre but funny). Our borrowers with overdue books don't know how lucky they are!
I could see that this video uisage could be good in a large library to show locations to borrowers, especially if the library consisted of several floors.
It would also be really good for showing processes, or "how to" on certain machines (RFID?). Short, succint information which holds your interest.

No. 20 -Youtube
Grrr. all sites blocked so will have to try at home or early in the morning on the Learn.net. very frustrating having sites blocked when you have time to do some searching.
No. 19 :Week 8
Well, this was quite interesting. I went into the short list and chose the category "books'. - and then Lulu. Did you know you could create your own book and have it published? what a special present for recipes etc that you could give your kids with their favourites in. The directions to doing this were really easy to follow with illustrations, text etc. The price is given for having this published - and although done in the States, I am sure you could get it done. Neat Christmas present? but not this Christmas!

No 18 : Week 8 ; Web 2.0 tools
(Just corrected this one as it had the wrong number!)Another account opened - just as well they are all free! Zoho wasn't quite the hohum that I thought it might be. Certainly like the idea of downloading documents and to be able to share them with people that you select. I found the template page quite fun - almost like a mini "trade me" of documents. This would be very useful for people who are searching for ideas on a specific document but don't know where to start.

Week 6 : Library 2.0
These articles certainly make you think of what the future may look like. Some ideas thought of 10 years ago are now reality. The people who are so far forward thinking are certainly giving us something to ponder over. Library 3.0 with the idea of "collecting librarians" is probably already happening on a personal basis with collections as they are at the moment. Often cusromers want to talk to a specific staff member as they know they will get great service. Library 4.0 and 3D is way out there, but with the comforting thought that the library is still the same in some aspects. Interesting times ahead!

Web 2.0 getting to me!
On a completely rtandom track, I noticed the new books had arrived. Looking through the titles I noticed "the blogging years 1990......." Really? I didn't think blogging had been around that long? Pulled the book out and the correct title was "The bolger years"! Web 2.0 is getting to me!
Del.icio.us
I guess I am not really interested in what other people blog about - or could be I don't have any dedicated interest. Seem to be interested in lots of things but not to a great extent. So del.icio.us I found to be very American based - I can see how some people would like this site to book mark favourites if you spent a lot of time on the computer which is not my thing. ( prefer delicious as in food!)

Wikis:
To wiki ? - or too wacky! It seems a bit random to have sites where people can just change information at a whim. There are a lot of good sites and I especially like the concept of reducing emails for a major event where you have many people involved. Cetainly would cut down the amount of misinformation. The Book lovers wiki is very like Librarything which I like. I know I did use Wikipeadia when I was doing the Community Profile (dare I admit that?) to find information about paintings which was very helpful.

Sooo! to technology. Dare I admit that i am finding it easier to post on my blog!! Still not sure whether I will keep it at the end of the training. Mind you, if i wain the Lotto then I will keep it to tell everyone about my travels.
Yy latest toy which I bought at the beginning of the year is a digital camera. So far I have learnt how to download photos and have just learnt how to shrink my photos when I send them to my family ( no longer takes me ten minutes to attach them to the email - only 2 mins: also the family don't have to wait ages before they can view them). I am hoping to try doing a postcard with one of the photos and also maybe some other tricks learnt during this training. I guess the next step is to take out a library book and find out just what can be learnt - what you don't know can't be learnt until you know you didn't know it. (good grief - that sounds very profound!).Knowledge is the key!

Well, here is my attempt at a post card! This site is quite cool and you could spend a lot of time playing with it. Anyone with a small business would find that this is an innovative way to make something quite unique. Perhaps in the future you could have a library specific card with a photo of your library!Tuesday, July 29, 2008

Flickr or twitch? that's what my eye is doing. Did manage to create a Flickr account but no matter what I did I couldn't download photos. So I have resorted to using the generic login and have had some success. I have chosen the following photo of rainbows as it reminds me of my father and my sister each time I see them in the sky http://www.flickr.com/photos/silyld/253993371.jpg .

I think I still prefer the old Rollo (Chocolate covered caramel - yum) but Rollyo does give you a lot of links if you are really into subjects and interest. Having limited graden space I am interested in container plants, especially edibles, so found this website quite informative http://gardening.about.com/library/ ( interested in hypertufa pots) even though plants were mostly American. Best of HGTV.com will also give other gardening or home tips

Well, it certainly pays to look at all the discovery exercises - especially when you think you have finished Week 3. Librarything is quite easy to use, although I could not find a record for one of the new books I am reading and enjoying -"Gravity sucks" - very funny. My reading list is at http://www.librarything.com/catalog/coolcat46

Here is my bloglines address http://www.bloglines.com/public/coolcat46. (Found out I should have asked earlier for an explanation as I had done it correctly two weeks ago! Just didn't understand to put the URL in my blog instead of trying to link bloglines and Blog together)The news link is good but I find I have already read it that morning in the newspaper. I guess I am one of those people who like to relax and mull over the news in hard copy form with a cup of tea. For those who like doing everything on computer, Bloglines would be great.

Enough said about Lesson Two! Lesson three is quite fun, but the time element is something to be taken into account. There are so many other tasks which have a deadline that must be done first, that lessons have to be pushed down the priority list. Probably may play around with this aspect of Web 2.0 in my own time if I decide to keep my blog at the end. lots of great cat photos at this URL

I am not sure whether I have completed the Session two exercise - have set up a Bloglines account and have subscrided to 14 newsfeed as well as taken some off. Still didn't find the tutorial helpful, and am still not sure how I managed to do it (who knows, maybe it is wrong?) So I am going to go ahead with session 3 until someone tells me otherwise. Definitely finding this very stressful

End of second week and still have not managed to finish session two. Bloglines example to follow does not match what appears on screen - getting very frustrated! Also very impressed (and envious) of other blogs set up (where do you find the time?). Will plod and blog along - email seems so much easier!

Trying to remember all the different email adresses, account numbers, passwords etc can be quite confusing especially if you only wrote them down and didn't label each one. One lesson learnt! AStill, the help site was good and and instant email from the blog to tell you how to do if you were using the wrong password.
