"Forced" to join facebook to keep up with their travelblog brought many new learnings. My first message to them was there for everyone to see, so I learnt how to do personal messages just for them. The previous Web 2 training stood me in good stead on how to edit a photo of myself and put it on my Facebook profile.
Amazing how many people pop up to be your friend - some I have not heard from since school days. I have now slowed down and am being a bit more selective of "ticking" the box. Not being an avid user of the internet I could miss important messages.
But for the avid social internet user facebook is great. Photos are another matter under consideration by copyright at the moment. Travel blogs are a boon both to the reader and the people travelling - no more writing screeds of letters or emails as well as having an everyday diary always for your own records

Week 5 : music files and mp3s

This was a voyage of discovery. I chose theItsfreedownloads.com site - mainly as I have itunes loaded on my home computer (which as you probably guess I have not used even after one year!). I was amazed to find that not only music but TV shows, videos and Audiobooks were also available for down loading A chapter only at a time for Janet evanovich and Da Vinci Code.
Looking for NZ music, I could not find Split Enz, Crowded house or Dave Dobbyn - although there was a mention of Split Enz and Crowded House when I did a search on Bic Runga. There was an additional link to Neil Finn and Tim Finn on that.
As for the main music menu, I find I am out of touch totally with modern music and artists. The next step would be to actually download music (but not on my dial up connection!)
For the avid music/ipod lover, there would be much to get from this site - both in being up to date weekly as well as for older types of music.

Week 4 : good Reads

Oh to have heaps of time! This site appeals to the librarian in me, and wanting to know what else is available out there to read. For a keen reader this site would be invaluable. It is way to keep tabs on what you have read, who else likes the same kinds of books and could perhaps point you to other authors, the ability to join a book club, etc. I wonder whether I would spend too much time reading what others think and forget to read myself! Great little site which I hope to revisit.

Week 3: Twitter.
Boy, certainly is hard to keep to the number of characters! I guess I am more of a tui garble than a little bird tweet! If I spent a lot of time online and using Twitter as a social contact, I might use this. I find it slightly annoying as I would rather pick up a phone and talk to someone, or use facebook and send longer messages. I don't think I would use this site again, but can see the possibilities for a business (or libraries) to use this as a promotion site for upcoming events. It might catch the attention of people who don't usually use or visit a library.

Week 2 : Zamzar

It seemed to be too easy to do - and it worked. I am not sure whether it would be useful to Learn.net patrons, as you have to have an email address plus access to documents. personally I have never received a document which I have not been able to download. A big organisation could probably use this to convert documents received, but of course would have to have the original - hence contacting the original sender.
Zamzar certainly is very simple to use and would have applications for some users. Not sure what I expected but I found this site to be very "worthy". maybe I just read the wrong types of books which are not published as ebooks. For the dedicated reader after classics this would be great. Then different ways of downloading were quite interesting, butyou wouldn't want to be downloading with a dialup connection! I went into the short list and chose the category "books'. - and then Lulu. Did you know you could create your own book and have it published? what a special present for recipes etc that you could give your kids with their favourites in. The directions to doing this were really easy to follow with illustrations, text etc. The price is given for having this published - and although done in the States, I am sure you could get it done. Some ideas thought of 10 years ago are now reality. The people who are so far forward thinking are certainly giving us something to ponder over. Library 3.0 with the idea of "collecting librarians" is probably already happening on a personal basis with collections as they are at the moment. Often cusromers want to talk to a specific staff member as they know they will get great service. Library 4.0 and 3D is way out there, but with the comforting thought that the library is still the same in some aspects. Dare I admit that i am finding it easier to post on my blog!! Still not sure whether I will keep it at the end of the training. Mind you, if i wain the Lotto then I will keep it to tell everyone about my travels.
Yy latest toy which I bought at the beginning of the year is a digital camera. So far I have learnt how to download photos and have just learnt how to shrink my photos when I send them to my family ( no longer takes me ten minutes to attach them to the email - only 2 mins: also the family don't have to wait ages before they can view them). I am hoping to try doing a postcard with one of the photos and also maybe some other tricks learnt during this training. I guess the next step is to take out a library book and find out just what can be learnt - what you don't know can't be learnt until you know you didn't know it.
